Niels Bakx is a freelance guitarist and music tutor living and working in London. His diverse musical interests and hunger for new experiences have led him to work with a wide variety of artists and producers including improvisational trio ‘What?!’, rock band Los and the Deadlines, Swedish singer-songwriter The Glass Child (no. 2 on Swedish Itunes charts), singer-songwriter Jo Kelsey, contemporary collective We Are Children, Tobin Jones (Cold Specks, Ghost Poet, Twilight Sad), Steven Wilkinson (BGM Music, Ubi Soft, Sky Television), Jay Stapley (Roger Waters, Westernhagen, Mike Oldfield), Edward Abela (Basstone Music), and Rhys Chatham (Tony Conrad, Elaine Radigue, La Monte Young).
Since 2011 Niels has also been busy as a guitar teacher, mostly teaching private guitar lessons to students of all ages and skill levels. He has also taught in group settings including a five day course for the 2011 IGF/Rock School summer camp hosted by the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance. Alongside his teaching and performing work Niels is regularly involved in various recording sessions as well as doing musical transcriptions and mixing.
Niels picked up the guitar at age 13 - inspired by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age and Jimi Hendrix - and at that moment made a decision to fully commit to learning as much as possible about the guitar and music in general. This commitment paid off and, at the age of 18 years old, he made the decision to move from his home-town Geleen (The Netherlands) to London. In London he enrolled at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) where he took the Higher Diploma course. Niels completed this course with a distinction and a ‘best overall guitarist’ award and after this he wanted learn and experience more of the London music scene. This led him to continue onto the ICMP’s three-year Bmus (hons) Degree course.
During his time in London Niels was exposed to a wide range of experiences, impressions and people. Over the years his passion for music, learning and performing grew and took on a different, more focussed, form. He started a rock band with United States native Alex LoSardo called ‘Los and the Deadlines’. With this band Niels has had the opportunity to play a wide variety of venues including the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, O2 Academy Islington, Camden Barfly and the O2 Millennium Dome.
He also started an instrumental trio called ‘What?!’ that creates highly improvised experimental/psychedelic music. His time in London also gave him the opportunity to work with singer-songwriter The Glass Child, performing and recording acoustic and electric guitars.
